Abstract

The emergence of Industry 4.0 has transformed manufacturing into a hyperconnected ecosystem of cyber-physical systems, yet production resources remain fragmented across organizational boundaries. Fluctuations in demand and machine availability generate persistent capacity imbalances that traditional market mechanisms or rigid contracts cannot efficiently resolve in real time. This paper presents a conceptual framework for autonomous agent negotiation that enables reciprocal capacity exchange among factories, production lines, and logistics nodes. Unlike price-based auctions, reciprocal exchange relies on deferred obligations and trust-building protocols, aligning with the operational rhythms of industrial partners that value relationship continuity over spot transactions. The discussion is organized around system architecture, governance design, structural trade-offs, fairness guarantees, infrastructure interoperability, deployment sustainability, and policy implications. We examine how software agents representing capacity owners can autonomously negotiate exchange terms using multi-attribute utility models and shared ledger mechanisms, while avoiding the pitfalls of purely self-interested bidding. The analysis explores the tension between centralized orchestration and fully decentralized peer-to-peer bargaining, proposing a polycentric governance model that combines local autonomy with network-level coordination. Robustness against strategic manipulation, information asymmetry, and failure cascades is interrogated through the lens of mechanism design and recursive reputation systems. Further attention is given to the physical-digital convergence required for deployment: digital twins, edge computing, and industrial IoT standards must be harmonized to provide agents with trustworthy state estimates. Finally, the paper reflects on competition policy, data sovereignty, and the societal consequences of automating cooperative capacity decisions at scale. The work contributes a holistic systems perspective to the design of negotiation infrastructures for the next generation of industrial collaboration.
