Abstract

The digital economy is characterized by platform architectures that intermediate between heterogeneous user groups, creating pricing problems that depart substantially from traditional single-sided markets. This paper develops a systems-level analysis of platform competition, information asymmetry, and pricing strategy. It examines how cross-side network externalities, data generation, and governance mechanisms interact to shape access charges, subsidy patterns, and differentiation. The discussion integrates perspectives from economics, information systems, and infrastructure studies to explain why digital pricing is not merely a matter of setting marginal revenue equal to marginal cost but an architectural and regulatory problem. The paper highlights structural trade-offs in platform design, including fairness, transparency, robustness, and sustainability. It further addresses how algorithmic information advantage can intensify asymmetries even as digital markets reduce certain search frictions. Case illustrations and cross-domain comparisons are used to show that pricing strategies are embedded in broader institutional and technical systems. The analysis concludes that durable platform competition requires governance arrangements that preserve innovation, protect participant autonomy, and reduce exploitative information imbalances. Policy implications are discussed in relation to competition enforcement, data protection, and infrastructural oversight. The paper contributes a synthetic framework for understanding how platform pricing emerges from the interaction of market structure, information distribution, and governance choices in the digital economy.
